Batt and Poly – An insulated method with years of experience!
Batt insulation (or blanket insulation as it is sometimes called), is a type of insulation product that has decades of real world usage in a variety of building types. It is also arguably one of the widest known types of insulating materials on the market today.
This type of insulation can come in a variety of materials including fiberglass and mineral wool, and has varying R-values depending on the thickness required.
When selecting an insulation type to use in your new building construction or during a remodel, it is very important to keep in mind that the R-value you select will have an impact on the buildings overall comfort, especially in our cold (and hot) Canadian climate.

Batt Insulation or Spray Foam – Which Product To choose?
When it comes to choosing which type of insulation to use in your project, there are numerous factors to consider. Some of the things that can impact which type of insulation you go with could be your budget, where the insulation is going to be used (ie above grade, below grade), how much space you have available to add insulation, and how difficult conventional insulating methods such as Batt/Poly may be to effectively install.
Rim joist pockets in a basement are a prime location where Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) far exceeds what can be done with typical batt insulation, as it both air seals and insulates these heat loss locations. It is nearly impossible to create an air tight seal in these spots using traditional poly vapor barrier, as over time the tape used to seal the poly almost always pulls away from the floor joists it is taped to. We have seen this over and over again.
